Prepare, Plan, Stay Informed

The City of Greeley Office of Emergency Management (OEM) ensures that Greeley is a resilient community prepared for all types of hazards. The OEM works to improve our capabilities in mitigating against, preparing for, responding to, and recovering from natural and human-caused disasters.

The OEM is a two-person unit located within the Greeley Fire Department. Reporting directly to the Fire Chief, the Emergency Manager leads the OEM and the city’s multi-disciplinary Incident Support Team (IST). The IST comprises emergency management specialists from nine city departments and five partner agencies. The Assistant Emergency Manager is the designated training and exercise specialist for the city and is available to help with planning and facilitating disaster event scenarios.

The OEM is responsible for updating the following plans:

What You Should Know in an Emergency

The forces of nature can devastate a community, whether tornadoes, storms, blizzards, or wildfires; all of these can create a natural disaster. Other types of disasters can include communicable diseases, terrorist threats or other life threatening emergencies.

If a disaster occurs, local government and disaster-relief organizations have plans in place to assist citizens. However, these agencies can become overwhelmed during severe disasters and it’s wise for you to have a plan to care for yourself and your family.

What You Can Expect During a Disaster

Interruptions in utility services (electricity, telephone, heat, water supply)
Explosions, fires and hazardous waste are serious threats to safety
Civil unrest
Limited availability, if at all, to purchase food or gasoline

Emergency Planning and Disaster Supplies

Assemble a disaster supply kit before disaster strikes. Ready.gov has guides to help you make your kit.

Evacuation

Keep fuel in your car if evacuation seems likely. Gas stations may be closed during emergencies. Know when to evacuate and where to go.

You will need to listen to authorities on the timeline to evacuate, if they give you time to gather some of your belongings and pack them in your car. You should remember to pack up financial documents, prescriptions, family photos, and other items of personal value. Make sure you have someplace to take the family animals.

Shelter

Be sure everyone in your household knows where to find shelter from all hazards that affect your area.

Animals in Disaster

With the exception of service animals, pets are generally not permitted in emergency shelters for health reasons. Keep this in mind as you are making your plan.

Mitigation

Take steps to ensure your home and household are safe from the potential effects of disasters like floods, tornadoes, high winds, and wild fires. These measure can be implemented before a disaster occurs.
