Traffic Operations

Advanced traffic operations promote the safe and efficient movement of traffic, and help maintain a high level of service to the public. We use leading-edge technology to continuously monitor and improve traffic flow.

Traffic Flow

Traffic Signals

The City operates approximately 116 traffic signals that run 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Signal technicians construct, modify, and maintain traffic signals citywide. Advanced signal technology allows the majority of our signals to be coordinated and communicate with one another using an extensive fiber network.

Intelligent Transportation Systems

We continuously seek to modernize the City’s transportation system through the implementation of emerging industry best practices. Intelligent transportation systems help manage and maintain real-time traffic data. We are also looking to the future and installing infrastructure that will support advancements in connected vehicle technology. Traffic signals along 10th St, US 34, and US 85 use adaptive signal technology, which adjusts signal timing based on the level of traffic.

Traffic Management Center

The traffic management center operates our Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) to manage and monitor Greeley’s traffic signals with real-time cameras and optimization software.

Traffic Safety

We analyze citywide crash data using comprehensive crash analysis software that helps staff pinpoint locations where safety may be a concern. Through crash data analysis and public outreach, staff work to identify corrective measures that can enhance safety for all modes of travel.

Signing & Striping

The signing and striping program ensures that traffic control signs and pavement markings are installed and maintained in accordance with city, state and national standards in a timely, efficient, and safe manner.

Comprehensive Signal Timing Complete!

In 2016, the City of Greeley Traffic Staff retimed 89 traffic signals in an effort to reduce delay, reduce emissions, and improve safety of our roadways. The last time this type of effort took place was in 2007.  The project included collection of new traffic data, updating computer models, recalculating clearance intervals, optimizing cycle lengths, and evaluating the final benefits of the effort.  When finalized, we determined that we are saving the community nearly $4 million per year, in reduced travel time, fuel consumption, and  reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
